| Most of these photos were taken in 1968 to 1972 when I was living in Manchester as a student. Film and travel were expensive then so most photos were taken at stations. Hence this gallery is different from my others in not following specific routes. |

I have been taking railway photos since the 1960's and have access to collections back to the 1950's. Most of my work is in colour, though some monochrome images will be displayed.
Having spent my career in teaching I now have more time to work on the images.
Over a period of time I will display mainly railway images of many parts of Britain and Europe.
Each gallery covers a specific area of Britain, together with others for various European countries.

Photos taken on various visits from the north east.
|
 | 16th Aug 2009 | Seascale and Sellafield (19 images)
A few pictures in blue diesel days. This is a small selection of images from my Cumbrian Coast visits.
|
 | 4th Jun 2009 | WCML Grayrigg to Shap (71 images)
Photos taken from steam days through to privatisation.
For some reason I have never visited Tebay.
|
 | 24th May 2009 | Carnforth and Steamtown (34 images)
Back to the days when Steamtown was open to the public.
Also some images taken at the station
|
 | 3rd May 2009 | Longsight and Heaton Norris Junction (12 images)
A small collection.
The Longsight images were taken by climbing up the embankment by the road bridge in May 1971, the ones at Heaton Norris Junction are from March 1972
|
 | 29th Apr 2009 | Crewe (42 images)
I visited Crewe on 13th March 1971 and 5th February 1972. As usual the weather was dull most of the time. In 1971 there had been a mail strike, hence there were mail bags everywhere.
Notice how drab it all is, and how dirty the locos were then.
At this time the line north had not been electrified, most expresses were in the hands of Class 50s.
|
 | | Preston (19 images)
I visited Preston three times, on 22nd May 1971, in November 1971 and briefly on 17th May 1972. Rebuilding work was in progress prior to electrification. Some of the images are of poor quality, they are included for their historical interest. Note the poor state of some locomotives at this time.

 | | Chester May 1972 (10 images)
This small collection was taken a day or two after the accident on 8th May 1972 when a freight train ran away and collided with a dmu in what is now Platform 5. The first 5 wagons were loaded tankers which caught fire, fortunately the fire was put out. The train crew escaped. One dmu coach was destoyed, the other ended up partly inside the buffet. The train engine, Class 24 5028 was written off in the accident.
Also a couple of pictures taken from a train years later.
|
 | | Manchester Piccadilly, Ardwick and Oxford Road (53 images)
I quite often used Piccadilly and Oxford Road, while Ardwick was quite near my flat. Most picturea are 1968 to 1972 with some taken on later visits
|
 | | Stoke on Trent (12 images)
I visited Stoke on Trent on 12th February 1972.
This was during a winter of random power cuts, to save power there was no train heating and stations had mobile generators for temporary lighting.
As usual the weather was dull for much of the day
|
 | | Woodhead and Torside (23 images)
I made a few visits over the years, but the weather was rarely good. I did manage to get a few photos of the electrics though.
|
 | | Manchester Victoria (32 images)
These were mainly taken between 1967 and 1972, with some later images
|
 | | Lancaster and Morecambe (19 images)
I visited these locations on 17th May 1972, a pleasant early summers day.I should probably have been working on the final assessment for my post graduate teaching qualification at the time, but managed to fit both in.
|
 | | Dinting (21 images)
A record of visits made to Dinting Railway Centre when Bahamas and other locos were based there. There are also a few photos of the viaduct and station with BR trains.
|
 | | Edge Hill (14 images)
These photos were all taken on a visit to Liverpool Edge Hill in January 1972, at which time the station was in a very run down condition. It was dry but dull.
It is situated at the top of the incline from Liverpool's LNWR Lime Street station, originally trains were cable hauled up the incline.
In one of the images the entrance to Waterloo tunnel can be seen, which led to the Riverside branch.
Edge Hill was also the site of the famous"Gridiron" sidings, built in 1873 and used for marshalling freight traffic by gravity.
